Crops to Produce According to Bioenergy Use

New and innovative energy crops and cropping systems are needed with specific interest for bioenergy purposes. Assumptions about technological development and energy use throughout the conversion processes are considered.

Available agricultural crops and cultivars on the seed marked are bred and managed for specific food qualities and not necessarily energy content. New and innovative energy crops are needed with specific interest for bioenergy purposes. Assumptions about technological development and energy use throughout the conversion processes are considered when evaluating crops as well as other aspects like some can only be grown in rotation with other crops, may require more irrigation and chemical inputs than others, and some provide useful cover for wildlife.

field testing

Risø are well equipped with facilities for growth chamber-, greenhouse-, lysimeter- and field experiments to test potential energy crops including equipment and experiences for chemical analysis and characteristics of harvested biomass for bioenergy uses. With such facilities Risø are able to carry out research on new types of crops and management strategies.
