ENVISAT
ENVISAT
was launched into a polar, sun-synchronous orbit in 2002 by the European Space Agency (
ESA
). ENVISAT carries an advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) which may be operated in several different modes. The majority of ENVISAT’s SAR modes are suitable for ocean wind mapping. In ScanSAR mode, the ASAR sensor is capable of scanning in a 400 km wide swath with a spatial resolution of 100 m. A higher resolution over smaller areas may be achieved in the Stripmap mode. We process data in both of these modes.
ENVISAT data can typically be downloaded via internet archives 1-3 hours after the data acquisition. This opportunity has opened up for operational SAR-based wind mapping.
