Solar Energy Programme

The programme’s main focus is emerging photovoltaic technologies, in particular polymer solar cell. For these cells, we seek to reveal and address any limitations to their performance, industrialization and cost. The activities thus span from basic research to industrial development. In our laboratories we synthesize new materials designed for optimum light harvesting, and we optimize the stacked structure of the solar cell with respect to energy conversion, stability and cost. We apply our research findings to develop industrial roll-to-roll processing of polymer solar cells and furthermore to develop panels of the cells for on-grid, bulk-energy production and other less demanding applications.

In addition, the programme addresses two more areas; processing of polymer from biomass and conversion of atmospheric carbon dioxide by means of solar energy.

The work in all three fields are rooted in a firm knowledgebase covering materials science and technology, organic chemistry, advanced polymer materials – materials for which the structure and chemistry are engineered for added functionality.

Our R&D effort has generated a comprehensive portfolio of knowhow, methods and equipment relevant for entities operating within R&D, production and application of polymer solar cells. This portfolio is made available to you through our experimental workshops, our materials, our specialized instruments and our service on characterization/testing of devices, see product and services. Custom solutions are available upon request.
